Chapter 2 comments

I enjoyed reading about the different teaching philosophies and the characteristics of good teachers. I agreed with all of the characteristics the book mentioned and thought they were good things to keep in mind. The questionnaire was helpful in getting me to think about my own personal teaching views and further develop my own style of education. It was a great way to foster metacognition as well as reflection.

The section on copyright laws was very interesting to me. I had not learned very much about copyright laws previously, and was surprised to learn how often they are violated by teachers. Tying it back to the section on teachers needing to be good models of positive behavior, if teachers participate in technically an illegal activity, that sends a very bad message to students.Even trivial and inconvenient laws should be kept, especially by teachers.

  1. Gina, your comments are true; teachers need to be role models in everything they do. Violating copyright laws is illegal and would send the message to students that plagiarism is okay. The information on copyright laws was informative to me as well because it had been some time since I had reviewed them, one more reason for teachers to keep current with such laws. Furthermore, I similarly enjoyed reviewing the teaching philosophies. Since the beginning of my preservice teaching career, I have found that my philosophy of teaching has changed a little, but I am still somewhat eclectic in that my philosophy is a combination of a few different views. Hopefully this proves to be successful in my future classroom as education is always changing, technology is always improving and our schools are becoming more diverse annually. - Michele Vest

  2. David Meza: Very good point about the plagiarism! I have noticed that allot in my schooling experience, even from my own elementary years. In fact, my novice teaching placement was riddled with plagiarism, I myself had to constantly go photocopy copy-written books. I hope that doesn't make me some type of accessory. Glad to hear that this questionnaire got you to become more self-aware of your teaching style too!
